After Your Are a Licensed Real Estate Agent

So, you have done all the necessary classroom or course work and have successfully passed your State Board exam. Now you can choose whether or not you would like to become a Realtor – which is a member of the National Association or Realtors, or if you would simply like to begin practicing in the field for which you studied.

However you want to begin, as a Realtor or real estate agent, you are going to have to first work through a licensed real estate broker. This is because only a brokerage is legally capable of making real estate transactions. All real estate agents and Realtors are obliged to follow this rule.

Who should you work with? That is really up to your desired focus. Did you want to sell land, lots or acreage? Were you hoping to focus on condominiums? Were you interested primarily in commercial buildings or retail space? All of these questions have to do with very different kinds of properties and it is the best way to approach your search for a brokerage to work with.

Once you have made the choice and have begun to work as a Realtor or real estate agent, you are going to have to pay attention to the time. Now that you have your license you are going to have to make a note of when that is due for renewal. Each state is different, but most renew within the first one or two years. Generally this will also mean that you have to complete some sort of post-licensing education. Again, each state is different and the types of classes you will need to complete depend on your state’s requirements.

Begin looking for ways of taking these courses as soon as possible. Not all states will have a lot of opportunities and you may end up cutting it very close to the deadline for renewal if you wait to enroll. Luckily, many real estate schools and colleges understand that most people working full time will not have loads of free time and have made many post licensing educational opportunities available in the online environment. This is a great way to get the knowledge and proper credit without having to find the time to travel to a school or campus.

Once you have earned your real estate license you can also make plans to eventually become a broker. Begin investigating your state’s requirements and someday soon you could own your own office.
